As this challenging year progresses, we endure yet another loss in the world of jazz. Richie Cole checked out of Hotel Earth a few days ago of natural causes at 72. Richie spent his life reminding us that bebop was not only ahead of its time but remained a vibrant art form even during some of the most unkind years towards jazz, also known as the 1970s. Performing with many of the jazz royalty while maintain his own small groups, Richie melded many subgenres of jazz into the blazing Alto Madness sound that typified his career. But at all points along the way, it was bebop that was the keeper of Richie’s flame, one that through his many recordings will forever burn brightly.
