A trio of incredible talent with un-calculable impact left the earth these past couple of weeks. Bobby Hutcherson, Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor Baron Thielemans, AKA Toots Thielemans, and Rudy van Gelder each contributed enormously to the world of jazz. Bobby redefined the role of the vibraphone and marimba in jazz; Toots legitimized the harmonica along with unison whistling and guitar improvisation; and Rudy van Gelder was the engineer behind so many of the classic recordings of the modern jazz era who established a high fidelity sound that is still a reference standard decades later. In this hour, we will listen to an incredibly small sample of the artistic mastery these individuals have left for us to enjoy for the rest of our own time here on earth.
