Jazz is a musical canvas that while having a well-defined root system and clusters of classic sub-genres is broad enough to incorporate and influence popular performers. While at times this may be seemingly limited to a musical flavor or topping, in many cases the underlying feeling, creativity, and funky groove of jazz manifests itself despite an artist’s more commercial trappings. One such artist was Bill Withers, whose jazz sensibility was evident in his compositions, performances, and funky groove. Sadly, Bill left us a few days ago. In this hour, we will explore the music of Bill and others who personify a funky, funky, soul.
