On the surface, music is a pretty simple affair: melody, harmony, chord changes, and rhythm. Each could stand on its own, but it's the combination that makes for compelling music. In Jazz, harmony is often stretched on the collective journey to the new frontier of sound. But in particular, tightknit vocal harmonies can take the listener on a musical odyssey that even the hippest woodwind section would find hard to match. In this hour, we will hear from jazz performers that clearly understood the literal resonance of jazz harmonization achieved through the human instrument.
