While often overlooked in more "serious" discussions of the jazz idiom, Smooth Jazz for many represented their entry point into the larger jazz continuum. Granted, many such recordings were flat-out commercial in orientation and by today's standards sound incredibly dated. However, there were endeavors that took seriously the challenge of delivering creative and intellectual depth while still appealing to the broader market. In this hour we will explore artistic expression that while smooth around the edges still maintains a sense of exploration and creativity.
