This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Christopher Parker Jr., AKA Bird. There have been few other musicians whose vision and impact on music remains as influential as that of Charlie Parker. In this hour, we will explore some early examples of how Bird took existing chord changes, overlaid new intricate melodies that defined the bebop idiom, and thus opened the door for modern jazz improvisation. We will also hear how these ideas continued to influence musicians decades after his passing. Welcome to an hour celebrating the Centurion Parker.
