While there are and have been many fabulous jazz musicians, there is an even more exalted tier of those who have had a lasting impact on this creative form. Oscar Peterson was one of those giants whose career spanned decades, but more importantly influenced a bevy of pianists and others with his compositional and performance prowess. In celebration of what would have been his 90th birthday 17 musicians came together to pay homage to Oscar by recording, mostly on his personal Bösendorfer piano. Since then a touring group of pianists and a bassist have been performing across the country in a series of events entitled Oscar, With Love. This past weekend I attended one at Stanford University and this hour reflects on some of the music and performers in attendance.
