There are many giants in the world of jazz, but few were as unique as Thelonious Sphere Monk. His music revolutionized the notion of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Despite his cerebral approach to composition, his performance was often comical yet at a deeply intellectual level. Monk made an impact on not only on jazz, but also musicians who would not normally be considered to be participants in the jazz realm. The many tribute albums to Thelonious reveal a broad array of artists who wanted at least for a brief moment to acknowledge the impact of his music. In this hour, we will listen to the music of Thelonious Monk as performed by a variety of musicians. Apologies in advance that we will only able to scratch the surface of works from this musical genius.
